From Negativity to Gratuity

Updated: Oct 31, 2022

The reality is that your brain is good at negative thoughts

Your brain’s first job is to protect you from danger, and this often comes with negative stimulation. Your brain becomes good at paying attention to anything that is wrong or negative. This is called “fight or flight “.

Fight-or-Flight

“Our fight-or-flight response can be triggered by social situations, overly stressful working lives and randomly generated thoughts.”

Our brain cannot always tell the difference between life-or-death threats and more minor concerns like those within our emotional wellbeing. Work commitments, financial stresses, social isolation, or a rude comment from others can bring about the fight-or-flight response.

But constantly consuming yourself with negative thoughts and thinking about worst case possibilities can be stressful!

It is important to attempt to overcome negative feelings with feelings of gratitude or positivity:

When you can practice gratitude, you help yourself not get stuck in negative thoughts and feel less stressed and overwhelmed. It’s so simple but it works!

Name or write three things that you can feel grateful for:

  • Feeling grateful for the good things in your life

  • Expressing your gratitude to the people who have made your life better

  • Adopting new behaviours as a result of interacting with those who have helped you.

Happiness as emotional wellbeing

“Happiness does not mean feeling positive or smiling all the time.”

The 12 human emotions: Adoration, Amusement, Anger, Awe, Confusion, Contempt, Desire, Disappointment, Distress, Fear, Interest and Sadness.

Happiness doesn’t mean feeling positive or smiling all the time!

To genuinely grow, one needs to embrace the full range of human emotions, including the difficult ones.
